Assessing illness or injury may require one or more of the following services. Physicians can request these assessments on behalf of their patient.
An independent medical examination answers specific medical questions about a work-related injury/illness and can occur at any time during the worker’s recovery. A medical examination to decide whether there is permanent impairment will be done after the injury or illness has stabilized and maximum medical recovery is achieved.

Either a general practitioner who is a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME.) with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners or a specialist will conduct the examination. Selection is based on expertise in the type of injury or illness experienced.
Reports from an independent medical examination are sent to the family physician and to WCB-Alberta. The examiner will not treat the injured worker; however, treatment suggestions are shared with the family physician.
A medical status examination confirms diagnosis and provides clearance for any further assessments, or if indicated, identifies other interventions with the objective of a successful return to work for an injured worker.
A neuropsychological assessment is arranged when a head injury or other neurological injury is identified. A psychologist who specializes in neuropsychological testing usually conducts the assessment. Following the assessment, treatment recommendations may be made.

A work assessment centre provides a detailed evaluation of medical and rehabilitation treatment required to successfully return to work. Assessment at these centres can take up to two days.
Based on the injured worker’s needs, he or she may be seen by a physician, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, an exercise therapist/kinesiologist and/or a psychologist.
Based on the results, recommendations may be made regarding rehabilitation services to the family physician and the case manager.
